An aside

Grantwriter, grantwriting, and any derivatives are not actual words. "Grantwriter" is not the same as "playwright," and if I said I was a "grantwright" (an archaic construction that would still be incorrect) I would get strange looks.

I dislike the term "grant writer" because it is not accurate. Putting a space between "grant" and "writer" stops my spell checker from highlighting it, but doesn't deal with the fundamental error: I do not write grants. No one who is called a grant writer writes grants. A grant is not something you write. A grant is something that my writing seeks to obtain. I write proposals, requests for funding, letters of inquiry, concept papers, etc. I do not write grants. Yet, I am called a "grantwriter.". And because it is commonly used, and a little less awkward than some other constructions, I will sometimes use it myself. Please forgive me.

"Proactive," on the other hand, is a real word (alas, it is found in the dictionary) but it is such an ugly word, and so overused, it is banned forever from my lexicon. (Terry Pratchett, a writer of great wisdom and humor, once had a character wonder, upon encountering "proactive," if it meant that one was in favor of activity.) "Impact" when applied to any human activity other than boxing or football, is incorrect, over-used and also banned.
